Manufacturing Engineer

Pertinent Information: Full-time permanent position with Tier 1 automotive supplier. Full details to be provided at time of interview.

Wage: $70,000 – $75,000 / year. Comprehensive benefits package.

Location: Lakeshore, ON.

Job Description

The Manufacturing Engineer is responsible for developing, implementing and supporting efficient and capable manufacturing processes and associated systems, controls and procedures for all new or revised products within assigned areas of responsibility.

Responsibilities to include the following, but not limited to:

  • Designing processes and selecting tooling and equipment which meet requirements for process capability, production capacity, cost effectiveness and maintainability. Specify and implement any associated work holding fixtures, mistake-proofing provisions and material handling systems as required.
  • Determining the sequence of operations and distribution of work content for effective line balance and labour loading per work cell. Rebalance labour allocation and process layout as required for production volume/mix changes or safety/ergonomic concerns. Identify any bottle-neck operations.
  • Determining the labour requirements for each new or revised process, preparing labour standards for each manned operation using the EASE or lowest repeatable methods. On an ongoing basis, audit the actual build process to ensure the labour standards are accurate.
  • Reporting to the Manager the existence of any hazards which could endanger himself, herself or any other worker.
  • Evaluating the manufacturability of new or revised product designs. Scheduling Product Evaluation Run’s (PER’s) with production and other departments using the PER database. Interface with customer and other facility to ensure that all deliverables are met.
  • Working with the Manufacturing Systems Software Specialist to specify and incorporate appropriate control systems, programming and automation as required for each process.
  • Conducting Process Failure Modes and Effects Analyses (PFMEA) and designing into each process provisions which prevent the potential for manufacturing problems.
  • Coordinating the approval, procurement, installation and prove-out of process tooling and equipment.
  • Providing ongoing technical support to continuously improve process performance while reducing manufacturing cost. Streamline and simplify existing processes, work methods, material delivery and sequencing systems to eliminate non-value added (NVAA) activity.
  • Providing Manufacturing Engineering support to the Process Sign-Off (PSO) and PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) activities to ensure each process and associated documentation is ready for full production.
  • Preparing Operation Description Sheets (ODS) for the sequence of operations defined for each process and assist in training the production personnel accordingly. On an ongoing basis, audit the actual build process to ensure the proper methods are followed per the ODS.
  • Preparing Capital Expenditure Requests for new equipment, tooling or construction as required for new programs or facility upgrades.
  • Assisting with the evaluation and implementation of employee suggestions.
  • Assisting with the development of and adherence to QMS and EMS procedures and documentation.
  • Participating in all safety training conducted by the company.
  • Keeping current in world-class manufacturing technology, processes and alternative techniques in order to identify feasible applications
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • University degree or College diploma in Industrial Engineering or Mechanical Engineering, Professional Engineering registration preferred.
  • Minimum five (5) years prior Manufacturing Engineering experience or equivalent, preferably acquired in the automotive industry.
  • Experience preferred in the areas of high volume assembly, fixture design, torque monitoring and control, PLC’s and conveyor systems.
  • Team approach to problem solving.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven project and time management skills.
  • Computer literate, including proficiency in AutoCad, Word, Project and Excel. Good knowledge of JIT, QMS, Process Flow, World Class Manufacturing, PFMEA and Continuous Improvement.
