Job Description:

The Die Setter / Setup Technician is responsible for the safe, accurate, and efficient setup, installation, adjustment, removal, and maintenance of small dies and related tooling used in production. This position plays a key role in ensuring machines are properly prepared to produce quality parts.

The Die Setter works closely with Production, Quality, Tooling, Maintenance, and the Tooling Coordinator to minimize setup time, prevent tooling-related downtime, identify technical issues, and maintain tooling in production-ready condition.

The successful candidate is mechanically inclined, safety-focused, detail-oriented, and comfortable troubleshooting tooling and forming issues in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Die & Setup

Review the production schedule and plan upcoming die changes and tooling requirements.
Pre-stage dies, tooling, fixtures, and related equipment required for scheduled production runs.
Safely load, move, install, align, and secure dies in machines using appropriate lifting and handling equipment.
Set and verify press and tooling parameters required for the production run.
Perform die changeovers efficiently while maintaining safe work practices and protecting tooling and equipment.
Adjust dies and machine settings as required to produce parts to print and maintain consistent production quality.
Complete setup checks and run initial parts to confirm proper die function, part formation, dimensions, and overall quality.
Make necessary tooling adjustments to correct dimensional, forming, feeding, or other production issues.
Support production start-up and assist operators in achieving stable, repeatable production.

Tooling Maintenance & Troubleshooting

Inspect dies before and after production for wear, damage, buildup, loose components, or other conditions that may affect performance.
Clean and maintain dies after production and return tooling to its designated storage location.
Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on dies and related tooling.
Complete basic tooling repairs and adjustments within the scope of the position.
Identify tooling-related root causes of forming defects, dimensional issues, wrinkles, splits, springback, poor forming, or other part-quality concerns.
Troubleshoot die performance issues and determine when tooling requires repair, adjustment, or escalation to Tooling/Maintenance.
Record and communicate tooling concerns, repairs, adjustments, and maintenance requirements.
Assist with continuous improvement activities intended to improve tooling reliability, setup efficiency, part quality, and production uptime.

Quality & Tooling Validation

Validate tooling setups before releasing production.
Perform first-piece and in-process dimensional checks using appropriate gauges and measuring equipment.
Verify that formed parts meet drawings, specifications, checking fixtures, and quality requirements.
Identify and communicate deviations promptly to Production, Quality, or Tooling personnel.
Support investigation and correction of recurring tooling and forming problems.
Maintain accurate setup, inspection, and tooling documentation as required.

Material Handling & Shop Support

Safely operate or assist with overhead cranes, lift trucks, and other material-handling equipment when trained and authorized.
Move dies, tooling, equipment, and production materials safely and efficiently.
Assist with tooling organization, inventory, maintenance scheduling, and other tooling-related activities.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area around presses, tooling, and storage areas.
Follow established 5S, housekeeping, quality, and production standards.
Perform other manufacturing and tooling-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Experience

Grade 12 education or equivalent. Certification an asset.
Previous experience in metal stamping, press setup, die setting, tooling, or a related manufacturing environment is preferred.
Practical knowledge of stamping/forming processes and press/machine tooling.
Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills (will be testing on mechanical aptitude)
Ability to recognize and troubleshoot tooling-related forming and quality issues.
Mechanical aptitude with the ability to perform basic tooling adjustments and repairs.
Ability to use basic measuring and inspection equipment.
Ability to understand and follow work instructions, production specifications, and quality requirements.
Overhead crane and lift truck experience is considered an asset (will train on-site)
Ability to lift/move parts /equipment up to 50lbs and 25lbs repetitively.
Willing and ready to work overtime as requested.
