Job Description
The General Machinist is responsible for setting up, operating, and troubleshooting a variety of machine tools to manufacture custom, one-off, and low-volume precision components. This role requires a high level of independence, strong blueprint reading skills, and the ability to determine machining methods, tooling, and sequencing with minimal supervision. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced custom shop where no two jobs are the same.
Responsibilities to include the following, but not limited to:
- Interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and specifications to determine machining requirements
- Plan and execute machining operations, including selecting appropriate tooling, speeds, feeds, and cutting methods
- Set up and operate manual and/or CNC machines (lathes, mills, drill presses, grinders, and broaching machines, etc.)
- Machine custom components to tight tolerances and quality standards
- Perform precision measurements using calipers, micrometers, bore gauges, and other inspection tools
- Modify programs or create basic CNC programs (if applicable) to support custom work
- Perform first-off inspections and in-process checks to ensure dimensional accuracy
- Troubleshoot machining issues and make adjustments to improve efficiency and quality
- Work with a variety of materials including steel, stainless steel, aluminum, plastics, and specialty alloys
- Deburr, finish, and inspect completed parts
- Maintain equipment and ensure a clean, safe, and organized work environment
- Collaborate with supervisors, and team members on custom projects and problem-solving
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Minimum three (3) years of machining experience in a custom or job shop environment
- Strong blueprint reading and interpretation skills
- Strong experience with both manual machining and CNC equipment
- Solid understanding of machining principles, tooling, and materials
- Ability to hold tight tolerances and produce high-quality parts
- Proficiency with precision measuring instruments
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple custom jobs
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Physically capable of standing for extended periods and handling materials
